The Wife of Noble Character - How Does Her Husband Feel?

Have you ever felt like you're not living the calling that God has put on your life? Maybe you've got a burning desire to get involved in mission, ministry, creative evangelism or even in youth work! But despite your're holding back.

Have you been watching other people step into God's plan for their life and now you wish you were in their shoes?

Maybe it's a worship leader that you wish you could sing like, someone in business that is more 'successful' than you or even the Super Mum in church that you measure yourself up against.

Have you been doubting whether you're even able to do what they do and because someone else is already doing it so well - you don't even try?

Well stop it.

I'll be honest, the advice I'm about to give you is easier for me to teach than live out myself. But I'm working on it every day.

Today's verse about the Wife of Noble Character, Proverbs 31 verse 23 (VOICE) says this,

'Everyone recognizes her husband in the public square,

and no one fails to respect him as he takes his place of leadership in the community.'

We already know the Wife of Noble Character is a word-picture of wisdom lived out through the life of a Godly wife, family-woman and master decorator (see yesterday's blog if you don't know what I'm talking about). And today, this verse may seem like it's all about her husband, but it's not.

From first glance, it actually doesn't seem like this verse has anything to do with her and therefore no relevance to us. But let's have a little look deeper shall we?

"Yeah, okay!" I hear you reply!

This verse is trying to explain to us that the husband of a wise wife, is able to go about his work, his calling and take his place in the community - in full confidence of his identity in God and his purpose. Because she is also secure in her identity and her purpose.

Her ability to be prepared, to dress herself in strength, to take pleasure in creativity, to put on the protect God gives through the Gospel, to perceive the value of products and to steward her time and money with wisdom - allows him to concentrate on his calling without worrying that he needs to be there to affirm her at every moment. He knows that God is the rightful King of her heart.

Now, you may not have a husband who is part of the 'leadership in the community' and you may not even have a boyfriend who hangs out in the 'public square' but I bet you still have any of the following:

  • parents
  • friends
  • church family

Any one of these people may feel the burden of caring for your self-esteem, or encouraging you to get your eyes off others and concentrate on the vision God is giving to you.

So to summarise, the point of this verse is this:

Taking ownership of your identity in Him and the call God has given you, gives others the freedom to be who they are called to be and do what at they're being called to do.
