The Wife of Noble Character - Was She a Spinster?

Have you ever wondered where the term 'spinster' comes from? It's a word that evokes sheer terror in women the world over. I can almost hear you now mentally screaming,

'I don't want to grow old alone!'

While researching today's Proverb, I stumbled across some new factoids! They do say you learn something new each day so I'm gonna learn you a thing.

Continuing on our journey with the 'Wife of Noble Character' let's look at Proverbs 30 verse 19 (NIV) which says,

'In her hand she holds the distaff

and grasps the spindle with her fingers.'

Earlier in this chapter, we read how she buys materials for their good value. But here, the writer is describing how this woman spins these materials into clothing for her household.

Factoid Number One:

It's common for some surnames to derive from past relatives job titles. So in the past, men who were bakers by trade used the name 'Baker' as their surname. And women who spun threads were called 'Spinsters' in their legal documents.

Factoid Number Two:

This verse is a line of poetry. Which means we can draw parallels between the imagery written here and with our own lives. Although you may not be a 'spinster' by trade, you may be a 'spinner' by nature. I'm not talking about running around in circles (although you may feel like you do this sometimes). But I'm talking about spinning a web.

So my challenge for you today is simply this: consider what you're spinning.

  • Are you using social media to spin a smarter/healthier/popular/happier version of yourself?
  • Are your actions portraying yourself in your true light or are they showing someone you don't identify with?
  • Are your words sending out the vibes that you intend or are you finding yourself short-tempered and easily lashing out?

You may not think you're doing it, but spinning a web of lies can be easier then being honest sometimes. But I want to encourage you that you are beautiful, even your most raw version of yourself - exposed and unarmed with beautifying filters. Take some time to consider what image you're giving the world and get to know the woman underneath.
